History and context
The present Baroque church was planned after the earlier building was declared unsafe in 1672. It stands on a site previously occupied by the mosque and, later, successive Christian churches.
What to see
Look for the nave and main liturgical space, as well as the grand atmosphere of the church linked to the celebration of the Misteri d’Elx.
Mistakes to avoid
Don’t describe it as Gothic: the current building is fundamentally Baroque. If you want a quieter visit, avoid coming during services or special events. As with many churches in Spain, opening times can vary around worship and local celebrations, so it’s wise to check the day’s schedule. Tipping is not expected in churches.
